The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred yesterday evening resulting in the fatality of a pedestrian in Southeast D.C. According to a press release from the department, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle that subsequently fled the scene.
The incident took place at approximately 8:58 p.m. in the 2100 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast. It has been reported that the pedestrian, later identified as 29-year-old Kurt Donnelle Morgan, was lying in the northbound travel lane when a gray SUV traveling in the same direction ran over him. The vehicle is said to have continued on through 22nd Street, Southeast, without stopping to render aid or wait for authorities. The driver's failure to immediately stop and provide assistance could be key in the ongoing investigation.
Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Authorities have yet to release further details about why Morgan was in the road or the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter. The identification of the victim suggests a narrative disconnected from the places we often associate with home, as Morgan was listed as having no fixed address.
The MPD is reaching out to the community seeking information about this hit-and-run incident. They encourage anyone with knowledge that might be pertinent not to act on their own but to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or to anonymously text a tip to the department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
