In a move to rectify an oversight, Cochise County Elections has issued a notice that 292 overseas voters from the Sierra Vista Unified School District will be getting new ballots. This comes after discovering that two local ballot initiatives were accidentally left off the original ballots sent out earlier this month. The missing items pertain to the district's budget and operational allowances. Overseas military personnel and their families are the primary voters affected by this error.
Specifics of the omission were outlined by the county's elections department: the affected ballots omitted Question 1, dealing with the additional assistance budget, and Question 2, relating to the Maintenance & Operations Override. These initiatives are crucial for determining the financial scope and educational quality within the Sierra Vista Unified School District. Cochise County Elections has pledged, a new, correct ballot will be mailed out to the affected voters by the end of the week.
A statement released by the Cochise County Recorder’s Office ensures all impacted voters their vote will count – but only once. According to their protocol, if both the original errored ballot and the corrected version are returned, “the corrected ballot will be counted, and the incorrect ballot will not be tallied.” This safeguard acts as a double-check to maintain the integrity of the voting process.
In response to the discovered error, Cochise County Elections has committed, to ensuring no voter is disenfranchised. Voters residing overseas can expect notifications about this oversight, and how it will be addressed directly. Emphasizing their commitment to rectifying the situation and affirming the right to voter participation, the department has taken quick steps to amend the issue and given reassurances that the new ballots will reflect the complete slate of decisions facing the electorate.
