New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has been implicated in a criminal conspiracy following the indictment of Randy Farrell, a businessman with ties to the mayor, who has been charged alongside his building inspection business. A 25-count indictment was unsealed, which includes charges of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud with a public official referred to as "Public Official 1" — widely understood to be Cantrell, though she is not named explicitly. WWL-TV reported that former federal prosecutor Matt Chester termed her an "unindicted co-conspirator."
According to FOX 8 Live, the allegations against Farrell include one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 19 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and three counts of honest services fraud. The indictments come with revelations that Farrell reportedly gave Mayor Cantrell gifts, including Saints tickets, in exchange for favorable treatment. This latest development may add to an already volatile political atmosphere as Cantrell faces increasing legal scrutiny.
Details of the indictment note that Farrell sought to have a city employee fired after she reported a scheme within the Department of Safety and Permits. As reported by WGNO, legal analyst Cliff Cardone stated, "Farrell was soliciting and accepting bribes and kickbacks to apply and receive permits in the name of licensed electricians, and caused a submission of fraudulent inspection reports knowing they weren't performed by licensed electricians." Fraser mentions the potential for up to 20 years of prison time per charge that Farrell faces but also notes the possibility of a plea deal.
Cardone mentioned the likelihood that Farrell could "possibly turn some state evidence against the mayor." Indicating the depth of Cantrell's legal jeopardy, he said that federal prosecutors "don’t put those in indictments unless they are serious about indicting public official number one," as noted by WGNO. With the indictment of Farrell, the timeline for potential charges against Mayor Cantrell could be nearing its culmination, as Cardone estimates an indictment against her may be mere months away.
