A New York man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, according to an article published by the U.S. Department of Justice. Elliot Resnick, 40, from New York, was handed a sentence that includes four months behind bars, an additional four months of home detention, and 24 months of supervised release, after pleading guilty to obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder.
The sentencing, delivered by U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras, also saw Resnick ordered to pay $10,539 in fines and restitution. Court documents, cited by a Justice Department report, indicate that the Chief Editor of The Jewish Press traveled from New York City to Washington, D.C., on a bus to partake in the events leading to the disruption of Congress's counting of electoral votes. Notably, it was made clear that Resnick's actions were outside his official capacity as Chief Editor.
On Jan. 6, Resnick's activities at the Capitol included moving up the east side staircase, beckoning and pulling others into the building, and scuffling with police officers trying to protect the entrance. The Justice Department's account detailed that at one point Resnick attempted to stop the officers' use of pepper spray by grabbing a officer’s arm. This aggressive act was part of the larger struggle that sent waves of rioters crashing through an open East Rotunda Door.
Once inside, Resnick allegedly moved through various sections of the Capitol, took photos, and further aided in the breaching of the building by pulling more rioters inside. Despite police efforts to clear the area, he reportedly remained inside the Capitol for nearly an hour. The investigation into the breach has led to over 1,504 individuals being charged, as per the same Justice Department release, with the FBI's New York and Washington Field Offices providing key investigative support alongside the Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department.
The ripple effects of Jan. 6 continue to be felt nearly 44 months later, with ongoing investigations into multiple cases related to the riot. The sweeping law enforcement response underscores the serious nature of the insurrection and the government's efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
