In a disheartening display of exploitation, a New York man has been charged with defrauding a cancer-stricken 77-year-old Vietnam veteran from Everett out of $20,000 and attempting to steal an additional $32,000. The suspect, Hongfei Huang, faces several charges, including larceny over $1,200 by false pretense and larceny over $250 from a person over 60 or disabled, according to a statement released by Police Chief Paul Strong on the Everett Police Facebook page.
The unpleasant sequence began when Officer Monzione was alerted by Sergeant Dupont, the Patrol Supervisor, about a grievous act involving a vulnerable resident. The veteran reported a significant cash loss on Friday. A swift collaboration among several units followed, meticulously gathering evidence that led to Huang’s arrest. Huang was apprehended during an undercover sting operation when he arrived to collect another deceitful cash haul but was instead caught by authorities.
Huang is currently held without bail, and the investigation continues with several search warrants pending and collaborations with elder affairs, the victim’s bank, and the District Attorney’s Office. Chief Strong’s declaration lauded the officers and detectives for their diligent efforts to protect and serve, especially in assuring that the veteran received due respect and aid.
This case casts a ghastly light on the predators who target the elderly, leveraging their trust for vile gain. The police chief emphasized the importance of vigilant communication within families to safeguard against such scams where elderly relatives may be deceived into relinquishing large sums of money based on duplicitous requests. Chief Strong advises a two-step verification process for significant bank withdrawals by senior family members, whereby a family member would need to be present to verify the transaction as a necessary precaution.
