Macomb County residents can now navigate a smoother route with the opening of a new stretch of Garfield Road, intended to improve road safety and traffic flow. The newly constructed section connects 23 Mile Road and 25 Mile Road in Macomb Township, and officially opened its lanes to commuters looking for relief from congested roads. According to the Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR), this $8.27 million project is a strategic move to enhance the transportation network within the region.
Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel emphasized the county's approach, saying, “We will continue to work with our local communities to strengthen our transportation infrastructure and advocate for the funding we need to strengthen and enhance Macomb County’s roads, bridges and transportation network.” The funding for this expansion included a significant investment from the MCDR and contributions from Macomb Township. The addition of traffic lights, new drainage infrastructure, and utility modifications were part of the project's scope, aiming to construct a road that not only connects but serves the community efficiently, according to the same press release.
The Garfield Road extension is a piece of a larger puzzle that Macomb County has been piecing together since 2020. Prior to this, the phase one of Garfield Road's extension between 22 Mile Road and 23 Mile Road, completed in 2023, was delivered on time and within its $4.5 million budget. The road projects signify the county's ongoing commitment to developing its transportation assets, focusing on safety, functionality, and a more pleasant traveling experience for road users. MCDR Director Bryan Santo stated, “Garfield Road is an important corridor in Macomb Township that provides much needed north and south access through Macomb County. The extension of Garfield Road will ease congestion and improve the safety and efficiency of Macomb County’s transportation network,” as noted by the press release.
Local residents are expected to feel immediate benefits from the enhanced infrastructure. “We’re very excited to have another main road that connects our north and south borders. With every completed road project, our community gets a little bit safer and less frustrating to travel through,” told Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano in a statement obtained by Macomb County Department of Roads.
The completion of the Garfield Road project is part of an ambitious plan that includes over 50 projects, totaling more than $100 million, aimed at rejuvenating Macomb County's roadways.
