Residents and commuters in northwest Oklahoma City experienced disruptions Tuesday following a gas line incident. According to KOCO 5, a hazardous materials crew was dispatched after a gas line was struck by a boring machine near Northwest 23rd Street and Lake Overholser. The Oklahoma City Fire Department reported that the incident did not require evacuations and thankfully, no injuries have occurred.
Traffic was impacted as authorities acted to quickly divert vehicles and secure the area. A separate report by News 4's Adria Goins indicated that the leak, inadvertently caused by a construction worker, led to lane closures at NW 23rd and Eagle Lane, extending down to Overholser Drive. This is an area near Putnam City West High School; despite the incident, all afterschool activities were expected to continue as normal.
Putnam City Schools sent out a reassuring message to parents and staff, indicating that everyone on campus was safe and the school's operations were ongoing. "A large presence of first responders are on scene," the district communicated, advising to avoid the area until further notice, as per News 9.
The presence of hazardous materials and emergency responders necessitated traffic adjustments and close monitoring of the situation. No evacuations of students from Putnam City West High School were required, even as lanes nearby were shut down to safely attend to the emergency. Oklahoma City Police and Fire were on hand, not just to redirect traffic but also to manage the overall safety of the immediate area. Drivers are advised to continue to expect delays or find alternate routes as crews work to resolve the gas leak issue.
