The Novato Police Department reported apprehending a 23-year-old man, Tariq Wade, who was involved in what initially appeared to be a minor public infraction but escalated quickly into a more serious confrontation. According to the official reports, a Novato Police Detective, while on supplemental patrol duties yesterday at around 8:49 PM, noticed Wade committing an unsafe pedestrian action. Upon contact and further investigation, the encounter took an unexpected turn.
Wade's backpack, which the detective felt during the stop, contained a loaded firearm. This precipitated an effort by Wade to retrieve his bag from the officer forcibly and an ensuing chase on foot. The pursuit, taking them near the train tracks east of Hamilton Marketplace, ended with Wade being found hiding in a dumpster close to Peet's Coffee. As per the Novato Police Department, Wade was "safely arrested without further incident" and is now facing multiple charges, which include being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm and ammunition, possession of cannabis for sale, and resisting an officer.
The assistance of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office proved essential during this high-tension situation. Community members are advised to contact Novato Police at 415-897-4361 with detailed information. Novato Police stressed that in cases of emergency or a crime in progress, the immediate call should be placed to 9-1-1.
