Oklahoma City has inaugurated the Love's Planetarium at Science Museum Oklahoma, raising the bar for planetarium experiences in the United States. The grand opening took place on Friday, as reported by OKC FOX. Equipped with a plethora of 4K projectors, the facility is now recognized as having the highest number of such devices in any U.S. planetarium, alongside aGOTO Orpheus Star Ball capable of rendering the most authentic starry reproductions available.

"The experience of seeing a light pollution-free starry sky is something many in our city may never experience outside of a planetarium," Sherry Marshall, Science Museum Oklahoma President, told OKC FOX. The inauguration marked not only a technological milestone but also a continuation of the institution's origins, given that Science Museum Oklahoma initially started as a planetarium. Visitors began enjoy public viewings starting at 2 p.m. on the same day as the ceremony.

Further elaborating on the features of the new attraction, KOCO reported that the Love's Planetarium's 4K projection system generates approximately 8 million detailed stars and recreates the Milky Way, creating a realistic depiction of the night sky. This comes with no additional charge to the base museum admission price, allowing guests to partake in the celestial shows without concern for extra costs.

There is an expectation for an increase in the number of visitors, spurred by the new planetarium's capacity to seat 120 spectators and its ranking as one of the largest in the world—second only to a facility in China. With various programs scheduled throughout the week, including live interactive presentations, Waylon Troyer, the planetarium’s director, expressed enthusiasm on the project to News 9, "It’s an incredible experience," he said. The museum advises guests to check the online schedule prior to visiting to accommodate the expected large crowds and ensure availability.

Emphasizing accessibility and inclusivity, the Science Museum Oklahoma has also taken measures to accommodate diverse audiences by offering shows for young visitors and Spanish-speaking audiences. These strides reflect the institution's mission to provide educational opportunities to a broad population in the most advanced setting available in today's planetarium landscape.
