Early this morning, a fire erupted at Quail Ridge Apartments in Bartlett, causing significant damage and injuring at least one person. WREG reports that the blaze started around 6:16 a.m. The Bartlett Police Department confirmed that one resident was taken to the hospital with minor injuries due to the incident.
Firefighting teams from across the county had to quickly mobilize to confront the raging fire. According to a Local Memphis report, Bartlett Fire Department was supported by Germantown and Shelby County crews in the effort to control and to eventually extinguish the fierce flames that engulfed at least one building within the complex.
During the firefighting efforts, a significant tactical shift occurred. A representative from the Shelby County Fire Department recounted that the operation "went defensive," a term indicating that firefighters were forced to retreat from the building's interior for safety reasons, as mentioned by Local Memphis.
While most residents were accounted for and safe, the fire's impact spread beyond property damage and minor physical injuries. In a FOX13 interview, a woman in the military recounted having to dramatically escape by jumping out a window from the third floor. Neighbors alleged that the fire seemed to start on the second floor, rapidly spreading and engulfing the structure.
The ultimate cause of the fire is currently unknown as investigations continue.
