Early morning chaos erupted on Interstate 10 as a bus carrying 23 passengers crashed near downtown Phoenix, resulting in one fatality and 17 people injured, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. The incident, which occurred at around 5:30 a.m., brought a swift response from the Phoenix Fire Department, whose efforts ensured the injured were attended to amidst the backdrop of blinking emergency lights and the hushed whispers of dawn.
The eastbound lanes of the freeway were blocked, leading to significant traffic delays as authorities worked to clear the scene. Recovery efforts lasted for hours, and according to the Department of Public Safety, the freeway was reopened by 9 a.m. Not much has been disclosed about the identity of the deceased or the specifics of injuries, however, most were described as "minor" by the Phoenix Fire Department.
Amidst the wrenching steel and shards of glass, pets alongside their owners awaited evacuation from the damaged vehicle, a somber reminder of the abrupt halt to their journeys. The FlixBus company, in a statement obtained by KEYC News, has mentioned their status as a broker, "connecting passengers to transportation," explaining that the involved bus was operated by a third party.
"Our thoughts are with all those affected," FlixBus said, emphasizing the detachment from the direct operation of the bus schedules which are managed by these third-party operators. The causes of the crash and the precise cause of death remain under active investigation, with FlixBus committing to keep abreast of developments.
