An Oregon man has entered a guilty plea for assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6 Capitol breach in 2021. The courtroom hearing is set for sentencing on Jan. 17, 2025, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Andy Steven Oliva-Lopez, 27, from Milwaukie, admitted to a felony count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding specific officers.

According to the guilty plea, after participating in the rally on the National Mall, Oliva-Lopez proceeded toward the Capitol, where he repeatedly sprayed bear spray into the faces of police officers. His actions, along with those of others, helped the mob to breach the police lines and unlawfully enter the Capitol grounds. Oliva-Lopez's arrest by the FBI occurred on Jan. 23, following his identification as a person of interest in the FBI's investigation.

The continued probe into the Capitol riot has led to more than 1,504 individuals being charged, with over 560 facing felonious assault or impeding law enforcement charges. According to the Department of Justice, this extensive inquiry spans nearly all 50 states and is actively ongoing.

The prosecution of the case has been a collaborative effort involving both the District of Columbia and Oregon's U.S. Attorney's Offices, along with the Department of Justice National Security Division's Counterterrorism Section. Additional support was provided by various law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.
