Thousands of New Orleans residents experienced a sudden loss of power Wednesday evening. Specifically, energy company Entergy reported that over 5,000 customers were left in the dark, with outages concentrated in Central City, Mid-City, and Treme. The outages, which began around 6 p.m., had largely been rectified by 7:56 p.m., with full restoration anticipated by 8:30 p.m., as mentioned by WWLTV. However, at its peak, Entergy's outage map reflected up to 6,241 customers without electricity in the affected areas.
An Entergy spokesperson stated, "Entergy New Orleans is aware of an outage currently impacting approximately 8,400 customers near the Treme and Broadmoor areas. Entergy crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service. The cause is under investigation at this time.” Despite the outage's significant impact, a definite cause has yet to be provided to the public, according to WDSU.
Concurrently, concerns over Entergy's response to power outages and communication have recently been discussed at the New Orleans City Council. In a meeting held on the same day as the outages, improvements were proposed to enhance Entergy's approach going forward, especially after natural disasters like Hurricane Francine.
As per the improvements outlined during the council meeting, disclosed by FOX8, Entergy's plans include an upgrade to the accuracy and visibility of their website’s outage map. "We do have a small disclaimer on there. I think it’s difficult to read, that says you may see red and green that doesn’t mean that your house is energized. I think we need to highlight that a little bit better,” remarked Nyka Scott from Entergy New Orleans.
