A young man from Pharr has been handed a five-year prison sentence for his involvement in a human smuggling operation. Isaac Jake Gonzalez, age 21, was convicted on March 30, 2023, for the transportation of undocumented individuals, as confirmed by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
The sentencing took place before U.S. District Judge David S. Morales who also ordered a subsequent three-year supervised release for Gonzalez. The U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed that Gonzalez's continued criminal activities while on bond, which included the alleged sex trafficking of a minor, led to the revocation of his bond.
Investigations beginning in the summer of 2021 uncovered a large-scale smuggling operation moving thousands of undocumented individuals via tractor-trailers. Gonzalez, together with his brother-in-law Anthony Williams, was implicated as a coordinator in the scheme, recruiting drivers to facilitate their illegal journeys.
As part of the operation's takedown on December 6, 2022, Gonzalez, Williams, and others were arrested, revealing their involvement in smuggling over a hundred individuals. Evidence showed some undocumented people were locked in trailers with inoperative refrigeration units. Williams had previously received an eight-year sentence for his role.
Following Gonzalez’s trial, the man will remain detained until he is transferred to a federal prison assigned by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. The case against Gonzalez was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara J. De Peña, with Homeland Security Investigations leading the operation with support from Border Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
