A 46-year-old man from Pierce County, identified as Ryan James Townsend, has recently been sentenced to a substantial period of seven years in federal prison for engaging in ongoing drug trafficking activities and the illegal possession of firearms. This sentence follows Townsend's plea of guilty earlier this year to charges that revolved around possession of a controlled substance with the intent to poorly distribute and two counts related to unlawful firearm possession.
In November 2023, Townsend was taken into custody and subsequently indicted after he was involved in two separate encounters with law enforcement that turned the tide against him. The case unfolded with significant interventions from U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman's office and saw U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik mandating four years of supervised release immediately following Townsend's incarceration.
According to records and documents from the official court files, as reported by the Department of Justice, the first brush with law enforcement occurred in November 2022. Townsend was seen discharging a handgun into the air outside a gym located on East 72nd Street in Tacoma. The erratic action, caught on witnesses' accounts and surveillance footage, involved a 9mm handgun and Townsend being discovered in a vehicle at a gas station, unconscious and at the wheel. Townsend's history of prior convictions strictly prohibited him from firearm possession.
The second incident, detailing Townsend's continued unlawful actions involving drugs and firearms, transpired in August 2023. Attempting to evade a traffic stop due to operating a car conspicuously lacking license plates, Townsend led police on a damaging pursuit. The escalation eventually culminated in his vehicle crashing, which resulted in Townsend not only injuring another vehicle's driver but also attempting to desperately escape on foot before being apprehended by responding officers. Search operations yielded methamphetamine and a hidden handgun in his car's glove box, with additional searches at his residence uncovering fentanyl pills, heroin, and more firearms.
The case, rigorously pursued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), also included input from Assistant United States Attorney Casey Conzatti, who spoke of Townsend's persistent disregard for the law: "On a number of occasions Mr. Townsend continued to possess firearms knowing he was not allowed to. On one occasion Mr. Townsend was observed shooting a gun into the air putting civilians in danger. Following the arrest for this conduct, Mr. Townsend did not stop his criminal behavior. Less than a year later, Mr. Townsend was found with a second firearm, and this time he had drugs with him."
