To tackle the digital divide, Pierce County has partnered with Astound Broadband to provide high-speed internet to its more remote areas. This initiative will extend coverage to locations such as Herron Island, Key Peninsula, and the Nisqually region, establishing a network designed to deliver speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second to over 3,200 homes.
The collaborative effort, valued at $12.1 million, includes Pierce County allocating $7.15 million from ARPA funds, while Astound Broadband contributes $4.85 million. This funding is part of a broader county strategy to expand broadband access to less connected residents. However, a review of the figures indicates that the actual allocations from Pierce County and Astound Broadband may not align precisely.
In the coming months, Astound is set to build 113 miles of fiber optic infrastructure throughout Pierce County. The plan involves various construction methods, including aerial and underground pathways, along with an innovative microwave process to connect the Key Peninsula ferry terminal to Herron Island. The local government is currently working through the permitting process, aiming for project completion by the end of 2026.
This connectivity upgrade is expected to enhance residential internet access, benefiting personal use as well as strengthening the infrastructure for local businesses operating in these areas. "High-speed internet has become a critical infrastructure, which we want all Pierce County residents to be able to access for their business, education and personal pursuits," stated Bruce Dammeier, Pierce County Executive, as stated in the county's announcement.
From the corporate perspective of this partnership, Jared Sonne, senior vice president and general manager of the West Region at Astound Broadband, highlighted the project's importance by stating, “Residents of rural Pierce County deserve access to the same levels of reliable high-speed connectivity that more urban areas have come to expect.” He praised the collaborative effort for exemplifying a public-private partnership designed to enhance the quality of life for local residents. More details on this rural outreach can be found in an official announcement by Pierce County.
