According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Pierce County communities are grappling with a surge of false threats against schools circulating through social media. In the past week, fake alerts have been flagged targeting schools in the Bethel, Puyallup, and Franklin Pierce School Districts, stirring undue distress among students, parents, and educators.
In a statement posted on the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department blog, authorities highlighted their commitment to investigate each report thoroughly. Despite the relentless effort by School Resource Officers and patrol units, all threats were deemed unfounded and false. It reflects an issue that schools and law enforcement nationwide face, with social media posts becoming a primary conduit for spreading baseless fear.
These threats often begin as a digital game of telephone: a screenshot of a social media post shared and reshared thousands of times, ballooning unnecessary anxiety with each iteration. The reposts frequently include added captions or alterations, departing further from the original intent and wreaking havoc on already heightened sensitivities surrounding school safety.
Law enforcement officials urge the public to report any suspicious activity or threats directly to the Sheriff’s Department instead of amplifying the rumor mill by posting them online. "Reporting a threat to law enforcement and sharing valid information on where you saw the threat is very helpful," the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department explained. Conversely, reposting or sharing a threat tends to distort the message, often leading it to be misinterpreted. Rather than reposting, immediate reporting is emphasized as the proper course of action.
