Commuters in Pittsburgh, prepare yourselves: the inbound Armstrong Tunnel will temporarily shut down over three upcoming weekends. According to an announcement by the Department of Public Works, this closure is part of a major $13.1 million rehabilitation initiative. The specified weekends are from September 14-16, September 21-23, and October 19-21, with the tunnel being unavailable from 6 a.m. Saturday through to 6 a.m., as reported by Allegheny County's official website.
The ongoing construction work necessitates these intermittent closures for a deep clean of the Forbes Avenue entrance and exit. To navigate this, drivers must temporarily shake up their routes. Detours will reroute traffic via Second Avenue, onto Ross Street, and then back down Forbes Avenue.
Meanwhile, the outbound side of the Armstrong Tunnel has been closed as part of the rehabilitation project's expansive scope. The Mosites Construction Company of Robinson is handling this work, which involves considerable labor in overhauling this vital piece of Pittsburgh's transportation infrastructure.
Residents and regular commuters are encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming changes and utilize alternate means of travel where possible.
