In a mission to quell the surge of gun violence within Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood, Violence Prevention Unit detectives made significant arrests during a routine traffic stop on Bennett St. at Brushton Ave. According to Pittsburgh's Public Safety Blotter, the stop occurred late Monday night and resulted in the recovery of multiple firearms, two of which had been reported stolen.
The checkered evening of September 2nd led to the arrest of three individuals: one adult male and two juveniles caught in the spider's web of urban patrolling. Detectives, drawn out by a bevy of calls about gunfire and non-fatal shootings that previously rocked the community, potentially interrupted further intended violence. The recovered weapons included a non-traceable polymer ghost gun with no serial number.
Diverging from the routine nature of a traffic stop, this intervention took a hard turn into felonious grounds. Tyshawn Morton, 18, now faces multiple charges, including Carrying a Firearm Without a License and receiving stolen property. This list is joined by Resisting Arrest, Prohibited Acts, and Carrying a Loaded Weapon. Post-arrest, Morton was transported to Allegheny County Jail, marking a temporary detour from the streets to the confines of legal oversight.
The young people, protected by their age, went through the Municipal Court and were sent back to their guardians. Besides weapon charges, the driver also got a ticket for having marijuana, showing that minor issues can reveal bigger problems.
