The Pittsburgh Steelers have rolled out the names of their 2024 team captains, and the roster is studded with familiar faces alongside a noteworthy newcomer. Returning to the leadership fold are veteran defensive stalwarts Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt, joined by special teams ace Miles Killebrew. Shaking up the dynamic, however, is the newly minted offensive captain, none other than quarterback Russell Wilson. As reported by WPXI, this marks Heyward's tenth notch as defensive captain, while Watt is notching his fourth and Killebrew his third on special teams.
Stepping into the offensive leadership role, Wilson is no stranger to the captain's "C," despite it being his initial season with the Steelers. His extensive resume boasts similar honors from his tenures with both the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, culminating in what is effectively a 12-year streak in captaincy. The Steelers Wire notes that Wilson's inclusion as the solitary offensive player in the captain's ranks this year was somewhat of a surprise, suggesting that the Steelers are banking heavily on his experience to marshal the team's offensive unit.
Contrastingly, the defensive duo of Heyward and Watt, along with Killebrew on special teams, represents a thread of continuity from previous seasons. They have been cornerstones of the Steelers' leadership, with Heyward and Watt entering into their fourth consecutive campaign as a commanding duo, and Killebrew anchoring the third phase of the game. Last season's offensive captaincy was held by quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who later lost his starting position to Kenny Pickett.
The new-look Steelers are set to unveil their revamped leadership and strategic prowess in an opening showdown against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8 at 1 p.m.
