In a pivotal case that has drawn attention to the ongoing opioid crisis, a Placer County jury has delivered a guilty verdict in the case of 23-year-old Carson Schewe. According to an official statement from the Placer County District Attorney's Office, Schewe was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the fentanyl-related death of Kade Webb.

The details, as released by the District Attorney's Office on Facebook, indicate that first responders found Webb deceased at a local business back in 2021. During their investigation, it was determined that Webb had ingested fentanyl which he bought from Schewe, and those drugs proved to be lethal.

The trial, which began on August 26 and was overseen by Judge Jones, included an array of testimonies and physical evidence presented by forensic experts and representatives from the Placer County Sheriff's Office. The jury, upon considering this evidence, found that Schewe acted with a dangerous disregard for life.

Representing the DA’s office, Senior Deputy District Attorney Devan Portillo led the prosecution, supported by the office’s Special Prosecutions Unit. The case has also been bolstered by the efforts of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office’s Opioid Response Team. With the web of law enforcement working to untangle the fatal consequences of opioid sales, their collaboration was key in securing Schewe's conviction. According to the District Attorney’s Office's post, the Victim Services Unit provided additional support to Webb's family throughout the ordeal.

The Placer County District Attorney’s Office is expected to hold a press conference following Schewe's sentencing, which has been scheduled for December 5.
