Breaking out the dance moves without the sensory overload, Plymouth will be hosting a sensory-friendly Dialed Down Disco event on October 3rd that promises to serenade attendees in a way that respects sensory sensitivities. Taking place at the Plymouth Community Center from 6-8 p.m., this event is designed to be inclusive for people of all abilities, ensuring everyone can get their groove on in a comfortable environment.

The City of Plymouth has found a way to innovate the classic party scene to include those who might typically shy away from loud music and flashing lights. Dancers will be able to quietly slip on wireless headphones and choose from three channels of music curated by a DJ, enabling them to individually enjoy the beats without having to endure the blasting sound systems common at traditional discos. This also means no pulsating strobe lights to dodge or overwhelming disco balls to avoid – just a dance floor tailored to create an enjoyable space for everyone.

But it's more than just replacing the audio-visual chaos with calm; the event is thoughtfully peppered with additional features to foster a positive experience. "We’re excited to continue expanding our sensory-friendly programming in Plymouth," Recreation Supervisor Paul Pearson explained, according to the City of Plymouth's official announcement. The venue will offer sensory bins for tactile exploration, sunglasses for those hoping to dim the lights a touch further, and designated quiet break areas for when the need to retreat and recharge arises.

While Pearson and his team at Plymouth have been laying the groundwork to provide these kinds of inclusive activities for years now, it's the community's willingness to embrace diversity in recreation that continues to make these events a reality. Tickets to the Dialed Down Disco are popping up for sale at $15 a piece and can be snagged either online or by phoning the Parks and Recreation Department directly.
