A tragic incident in Portland's North Precinct has the Narcotics and Organized Crime (NOC) Unit grappling with the complexities of substance abuse after a two-year-old child's life was cut short, suspected by fentanyl exposure. On the afternoon of September 12, North Precinct officers, in response to urgent calls, arrived at a residence on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to find the heartbreaking scene of a child in cardiac arrest, who was then rushed to a local hospital. Still, despite the frantic efforts of medical personnel, the child sadly passed away.

While the Medical Examiner's final verdict on the cause of death awaits, indicators suggest fentanyl was involved, a grim prospect that opened an investigation led by the PPB’s NOC Unit, as with no arrests being made yet family members and known associates have been interrogated however the child’s mother, who departed the scene as events unfolded, has yet to be interviewed by detectives, and her identity remains undisclosed according to the statement by the Portland Police Bureau. Portland Police Bureau's update reflects a community shaken by the incident, amidst wider concerns over substance distribution and the burgeoning overdose crisis.

Chief Bob Day expressed the collective grief, saying, "I am incredibly saddened to hear about the death of this little girl," underscoring the significance of the tragedy not only for those closest to the child but also reaching the broader precincts of society from neighbors to first responders. Day I also renewed PPB’s commitment to "investigating and arresting people who are illegally distributing these dangerous substances" and collaborating closely with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office to pursue due justice.

Portland has seen a disturbing rise in overdose notifications to PPB this year—in the nascent months of 2024, over 210 overdoses have been reported, of which five cases involved children, rising in comparison to 303 in the entire previous year where nine children were affected but this number is not just another statistic, it is a reflection of a pervasive crisis that is relentlessly chiseling away at the fabric of our communities, especially its youngest and most vulnerable members.
