Tragedy unfolded on a bustling Roswell thoroughfare when police officers were compelled to use lethal force against a man accused of brandishing a weapon and charging toward them. The man, who earlier had allegedly attempted to stab a MARTA bus driver over a fare dispute, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. This is the account detailed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The encounter initiated on the 10000 block of Alpharetta Highway when the individual became irate upon being asked to pay his bus fare and allegedly attacked the bus driver, according to a MARTA police spokeswoman in a statement obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Notably, the bus driver emerged from the incident unharmed and felt comfortable enough to continue their route, MARTA police added.
Soon after, Roswell police located the suspect near the intersection of Alpharetta Highway and Mansell Road. When approached by the officers, the man reportedly brandished a pair of scissors and charged at them. Initially, officers attempted to deploy a taser, but it was ineffective, so they resorted to firing their service weapons as the man continued to advance. Local resident Yusi Li told FOX 5 Atlanta about the chaos of the scene, saying, "I see a whole line of police cars blocking the entire road I've never seen so many police cars in my entire life." The man’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
As per department policy, the GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Meanwhile, the Roswell Police Department has also requested the GBI to take the lead on the matter. The incident in Roswell was one of three officer-involved shootings across Georgia on the same day, informing the GBI. Alpharetta Highway faced closures for several hours for the collection of evidence, impacting the daily flow and adding a tangible gravity to the events that had just transpired within community.
Reflecting the communal concern, Patsy Seay, who works across the street from where the shooting occurred, told FOX 5 Atlanta, "When you get to the point where you have to worry about officers being safe because people aren't afraid of them anymore, it's a scary world." She continued to express her deep concerns for all individuals involved, "All I could do when I heard what happen was to start praying for the officers, for the family of the guy who was shot."
