In what culminated as a month-long sting operation, the Southwest Sheriff’s Station Investigations Bureau has announced the arrest of a 44-year-old man for allegedly attempting to solicit sex with a minor online. Laith Fathi Sikta, of Sacramento, was caught by authorities when he drove to Murrieta planning to meet with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old girl on August 30, 2024. The girl, however, was revealed to be an undercover peace officer impersonating a minor in an online operation focused on catching sexual predators.
According to the official report from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Sikta communicated over the Internet with the purported minor, arranging a middle-of-the-night rendezvous with intentions that law enforcement characterized as criminal. Driving from Sacramento to meet, Sikta was met not by a young girl, initiated with innocence in mind, but by deputies ready with handcuffs.
During the arrest, authorities discovered cannabis in Sikta’s vehicle, adding to the seriousness of charges that include contacting a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, distributing harmful matter electronically to a minor, and offering to furnish cannabis to a minor. Sikta was subsequently booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center where he awaits further proceedings.
Sikta's capture is a stark reminder of the digital dangers lurking in cyber enclaves where predators often believe they can operate anonymously. However, the vigilance of our law enforcement remains a beacon of deterrent against such nefarious activities. The reporting supervisor, Sergeant Joe Narciso, praised the diligent work of his team, ensuring that one more predator was off the streets.
This case is still under active investigation with Southwest Sheriff’s Station calling for public assistance in providing any relevant information. Subjected to the privacy of ongoing investigations, the department has withheld further detail at this time.
