San Diego Police Department Officer Zachary Martinez, who suffered serious injuries following a late-August traffic collision, was discharged from the UCSD Burn Unit ICU and returned home for continued recovery on September 3. In a statement on the official City of San Diego website, the police department expressed appreciation for the community support during the past two weeks since the incident.

UC San Diego Health noted Martinez's departure from the hospital, emphasizing moments of emotional support from family, fellow officers, and hospital staff. "It was a true honor for our team to care for Mr. Martinez. We are so pleased he is now able to go home to continue his recovery," said Jeanne Lee, MD, director of the Burn Center at UC San Diego Health, known for providing leading-edge treatment to residents of San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Martinez, who joined the San Diego Police Department 18 months ago, was released from Sharp Memorial Hospital following the Clairemont Mesa-area crash that also took the life of his colleague, Officer Austin Machitar, and a young motorist. In a news conference reported by CBS8, SDPD Chief Scott Wahl reported, "He's very thankful to be alive." Wahl also mentioned it was too soon to determine if Martinez could return to full duty given his long road ahead to recovery.

Following the tragic incident, the San Diego Police Officers Association initiated a fundraiser with a target of $250,000 to help cover funeral and medical expenses. As per the Peace Officers Research Association of California, contributions have reached over $208,343. A fundraiser at Moonshine Beach contributed with significant support. Moonshine Beach manager Reilly Tingle stated, as per CBS8, "We were obviously heartbroken hearing what happened the tragic incident with the officers involved. One of the officers, Zachary, was a frequent here of line dancing nights especially here at Moonshine Beach."
