In a recent escalation of internal disputes within the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, Assistant Sheriff Ryan Monaghan has been dismissed amidst allegations of possible retaliation. The county's Board of Supervisors has openly questioned Sheriff Christina Corpus's motive for the firing after Monaghan took part in an outside investigation into the department's tensions, NBC Bay Area reported.
According to a statement released by Supervisor Ray Mueller on behalf of the Board, Monaghan's involvement in the inquiry spearheaded by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell prompted concerns. With attempted interference by Corpus cited, the move drew scrutiny from union members who were already at odds with the Sheriff's Office over policy changes made without their input and a lack of dialogue regarding overtime practices. "The timing of the sheriff's action and information provided by Assistant Sheriff Monaghan suggest possible retaliation against Assistant Sheriff Monaghan for participating in Judge Cordell's independent investigation," Mueller stated, as per the KTVU's coverage.
In the wake of the firing, the Board of Supervisors has signaled a strong position supporting the union and has prepared to take legal measures to shield the investigation's integrity. They also vow to protect the rights of other witnesses participating in Judge Cordell’s independent review. Mueller has emphasized the board's readiness to use legal tools. "The investigation will continue and will not be obstructed," he assured, according to NBC Bay Area report.
Responding to allegations and statements made by the board, Sheriff Corpus struck back, vehemently dismissing the claims of retaliation as "pure speculation." While making decisions amidst ongoing inquiries, Corpus defended her management of the Sheriff's Office personnel. "When the people of San Mateo County elected me as sheriff, they entrusted me to make decisions about who I include on my executive staff. The coach picks the team. Period," said Corpus in an assertion reported by NBC Bay Area.
