Starting January 1, 2025, workers in unincorporated San Mateo County will increase the minimum wage to $17.46 an hour. This automatic adjustment supports employees working at least two hours per week, from gig workers to full-time staff, including tipped employees and people of all ages, with few exceptions, as per the County of San Mateo.

This increase follows the Board of Supervisors' decision in 2022 to establish a minimum wage that rises annually based on the consumer price index. The ordinance applies to areas like North Fair Oaks, the agricultural region south of Pacifica to Pescadero, and other unincorporated areas like Broadmoor Village.

The County Executive's Office informs employees and employers about the new wage to ensure a smooth transition. Enforcement will be handled by the California Labor Commissioner’s Office, providing consistency for businesses.

In line with state law, new workers, or "learners," can be paid 85% of the minimum wage for their first 160 hours before earning the full $17.46 rate.
