In Santa Rosa, a pedestrian has succumbed to fatal injuries after being struck by several vehicles on US-101. According to the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) Santa Rosa, the incident occurred today, at around 12:09 AM, when officers responded to reports of a female walking dangerously close to traffic lanes on the southbound side of the highway at the West Sierra Blvd. on-ramp.
The grim sequence unfolded as CHP officers reached the scene at 12:15 AM and attempted to approach the woman. She fled, moving recklessly across the southbound lanes and into the path of northbound traffic, where the impact with passing vehicles led to her death. Despite a rapid police response, she ran across the southbound lanes and entered the northbound side, which inevitably led to the tragic outcome.
All drivers involved in the incident remained at the site and are cooperating with the ongoing investigation of this unfortunate accident. The investigation into whether the pedestrian herself was under the influence is still ongoing, and her identity, yet to be disclosed, will be released through the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office in due time.
The northbound lanes of US-101 were closed until approximately 6:20 AM to accommodate the thorough investigation being led by the CHP's Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.
