In Sarasota, the Colson Hotel, an important historic site for African Americans during segregation, faces a crucial decision. A 331-page report highlights severe issues with the building, including termite infestation and structural damage. The Sarasota City Council will discuss the hotel's future at Tuesday’s meeting, according to ABC Action News.
As talks of possible demolition continue, the community is rallying to support the Colson Hotel, which honors Sarasota’s first Black resident, Lewis Colson. The hotel served as a safe haven for Black entertainers and athletes during a time when they were barred from white hotels. Vickie Oldham of the African American Cultural Coalition told WTSP, “This was the place that athletes and entertainers would check in to a hotel for an overnight stay or a stay for a couple of days when they could not check in to white hotels.”
With growing support for preservation, the future of the Colson Hotel is uncertain. The issue goes beyond dealing with damage and mold; it's about maintaining a link to a significant part of the community’s history.
