South Philadelphia has been shaken by an audacious theft where three pallets of seafood, worth a reported $42,000, were stolen from a tractor-trailer. According to 6ABC, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. today at the intersection of South 7th Street and Packer Avenue. Police said six individuals, clad in all black and masks, made off with the seafood in three separate vehicles.
This theft is the latest in a series of cargo heists targeting parked tractor-trailers in the Philadelphia area. The suspects in the previous incidents were described often operating in groups of four to eight, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia. Police have advised drivers to avoid confronting the perpetrators and instead, to safely contact law enforcement.
The truck driver, awoken by the movement from the back of his vehicle during the theft, witnessed the crime in progress. A white van, a burgundy SUV, and a grey car were reportedly involved in the hasty departure from the scene, heading towards Oregon Avenue. This detail was included in an account on the Philadelphia Inquirer, as described by Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.
Reflecting on an escalating trend, incidents involving the theft of significant amounts of seafood have occurred previously. For example, in April, a truck driver was assaulted, and $30,000 worth of snow crabs were taken from a Walmart parking lot. The Philadelphia Police's Northeast Detectives had previously held a news conference warning of such thefts, stressing the prevalence of these crimes in both the Northeast and South regions of Philadelphia. These warnings were noted following a heist in October where an estimated $73,000 worth of crab clusters were similarly pilfered from a truck on Germantown Avenue, as Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
