The "Made in Seguin" event, organized by Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is a local initiative hitching its wagons to the National Manufacturing Month this October. With high school students in mind, the SEDC, together with multiple school districts, has arranged tours of local manufacturing sites on October 16. The initiative is designed to open young minds to the opportunities that lie within their hometown's robust manufacturing sector.
As reported by the City of Seguin's official website, the Seguin region boasts a staggering 8,400 manufacturing jobs. During the tours, students will get a glimpse at various manufacturing facilities, from pipe productions at AmeriTex to bottling operations at Niagara. Seguin's job concentration in this sector is over four times the national average, undoubtedly making it a heavy-hitter in the industry. Acknowledging the vitality of early career planning, Josh Schneuker, Executive Director of Economic Development for the City of Seguin, said, "Students need to think about career pathways early and often."
Participating companies offering a sneak peek into their operations include some of the area's largest employers. With a lineup that reads like a who's who of local industry giants such as Cargill, Cavco Texas, and Vitesco Technologies — students are set for an educational treat. These tours aim to bridge the gap between education and employment, providing students with real-world context for the skills they're taught in school programs which bodes well for local economic synergy.
One of the highlights of the event is the apprenticeship program shared by United Alloy, a participating company. David Ewing, the Plant Manager at United Alloy, said in a statement obtained by the City of Seguin website, "Our Youth Apprenticeship Program offers high school juniors and seniors the chance to explore careers in our facility while gaining on-the-job training and experience." With apprenticeships providing a crucial hands-on complement to academic learning, Made in Seguin seems poised to offer more than just a day's excursion—it's a conduit to potential careers.
