Snellville residents can expect an uptick in their annual expenses come the end of this week, as the city has announced an increase in stormwater fees, a decision aimed at addressing the aging and deteriorating infrastructure uncovered by a recent rate study. According to the City of Snellville website, the Stormwater Utility, in place since 2008, will hike the base rate to $125 annually, marking an approximate $5.64 monthly increase for most residential properties.
The City of Snellville is increasing rates due to rising labor and material costs, which have strained the Stormwater Utility’s budget. A rate study by Integrated Science & Engineering revealed the financial needs to maintain the system. Snellville has been upgrading infrastructure but still needs to replace over 200 severely corroded pipe sections. The base rate has rarely increased; the last rise was in 2016, making this the second increase in the Stormwater Utility's 16-year history. The new fee structure is essential for addressing the most damaged parts of the infrastructure. Updated stormwater fees will appear on 2024 property tax bills.
As property tax bills are issued, Snellville property owners will face a new stormwater fee, reflecting the need to maintain critical infrastructure. The city emphasizes that the new rate will help replace the most damaged pipes, aiming to prevent higher costs and environmental issues down the line.
