Snohomish County is ushering in new leadership in its fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion with the appointment of Wil Johnson as the Chief DEI Officer. Starting his tenure today, Johnson brings a wealth of experience from education and community work, committed to fortifying an inclusive environment within the county.
Chosen to steer the Office of Social Justice (OSJ), which was initiated in efforts to expand the county's dedication to equity and understanding, Johnson is no stranger to the local landscape. His previous role as Director of Equity and Inclusion for the Snohomish School District since 2021 has prepared him for the challenges that lie ahead. "I am thankful for this opportunity to support and serve this community which I call home," Johnson expressed in a statement obtained by Snohomish County News. He articulated a vision centered on ensuring individuals and communities have essential access to enjoy a sense of belonging and safety.
Wil Johnson's background is comprehensive, encompassing a stint as a medical specialist in the U.S. Army and academia, having secured his Certificate of Education Leadership and Master in Teaching from the City University of Seattle and the University of Washington. As the mastermind behind the At-homish Podcast, Johnson has been creating spaces for inclusive dialogue, aside from his work as a consultant on education, equity, and communication.
"We are so grateful to welcome Wil to our team. His experience in building strong relationships, educating diverse audiences, and finding ways to address systemic barriers will be invaluable," County Executive Dave Somers remarked, according to the same news release. The Office of Social Justice, having been founded in 2020, has pursued an increase in equity and inclusion, highlighting the necessity to reflect the diversity of the communities served—a task which had been untended since January.
