A Sonoma motorcyclist has been arrested on charges of reckless driving and operating a vehicle without insurance following an incident near Sonoma Valley High School that endangered students. According to the Sonoma Police Department, the episode unfolded on what should have been a typical afternoon as students were departing the school grounds.
The Community Resource Officer present on the scene was originally engaging with staff and students when they spotted the motorcyclist, identified as 23-year-old Francisco Castro of Sonoma, reportedly speeding up Broadway. Witnesses claim the driver was moving northward at high speed during the crucial moments as the school day ended. Quickly reacting, the officer alerted others to the perilous maneuvering of Castro, who appeared to careen through traffic and daringly weave through a group of students utilizing a marked crosswalk.
A swift collaboration among the deputies in the vicinity ensued, leading to Castro's apprehension. Within two minutes of the initial observation, another deputy managed to locate and stop Castro. "The driver was observed traveling at an estimated 70 MPH, weaving through traffic, and slowed enough to weave through students who were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk", detailed the report from the Sonoma Police Department.
Castro was subsequently released with a citation upon his arrest, and his motorcycle was impounded. Echoing a sentiment widely held in communities across the nation, local officials took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of road safety, especially in school zones. "We want to remind everyone the speed limit in a school zone is 25 MPH when students are present and fines can be increased if cited", the Sonoma Police Department underscored.
