The Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a 33-year-old Southeast DC man, Zamar Jovan Sharpe, in connection to a series of home invasions. According to MPD's report, Sharpe is charged with Theft One (Stolen Auto), two counts of Burglary One, and three counts of Unlawful Entry. The detainee is linked to two burglaries and three unlawful entries in the District.
One report details an incident on April 27, where victims awoke to find their residence in the 3900 block of 1st Street, Southwest, compromised and personal items, including car keys, to have been stolen. With the stolen keys, the suspect then fled in the victim's vehicle. Misplaced among the search for clues and answers, residents of the quiet street expressed a mix of concern and disbelief. These offenses span the period from late April to late May, with repeated unlawful entries reported as recently as May 22.
Adding to the sequence of events, another burglary was reported on May 18. This time it occurred at around 4:48 a.m. in the 900 block of Blackney Lane, Southeast. As with the previous incidents, the suspect left the scene successfully with property from the residence.
Despite having fled after each unlawful attempt, the suspect did not always seize property during the incidences reported on May 18, May 20, and May 22 within the same area of 1st Street, Southwest. These rash of unlawful entrances had put residents on edge, as the thief's motives drifted between theft and a bold disregard for personal boundaries.
The arrest came about as a result of diligent detective work, culminating on Saturday, August 31. While the cases remain under investigation, the MPD urges anyone with relevant information to contact authorities. The Department is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for tips leading to an arrest and indictment in this matter. Tips can be shared with the police by calling (202) 727-9099, or by sending a text to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
