In the wake of the tragic incident outside Spalding County Courthouse, Sheriff Darrell Dix has taken to Facebook to address what he describes as misinformation regarding the case. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Dix stated that the assertion that Mrs. Mallory asked for an escort was incorrect. He clarified that the request was made to a clerk rather than a deputy, and Mrs. Mallory did not seek assistance from law enforcement as she walked through the courthouse and entered her vehicle.
The violence erupted when Mr. Mallory, positioned beside Mrs. Mallory's car, fired multiple shots from his passenger window, fatally hitting her before fleeing the scene. Deputies responded to the gunshots but the perpetrator had already departed. Later, Mr. Mallory attempted suicide and, despite this, survived. According to WJBF News, Sheriff Dix detailed their strained history, noting that while deputies had been called to the Mallory residence multiple times, lack of cooperation and clear evidence hindered the determination of a primary aggressor.
Sheriff Dix also emphasized that deputies provided information about services for help and counseling to both parties. On one occasion where Mr. Mallory was arrested, he posted bond, and Dix disclosed that they are investigating who posted his bond. The Sheriff sought to reinforce his stance by stating to WJBF News, "We have to take facts and evidence and weigh them against the law in order to act."
However, many on Facebook found Dix’s statement to be "highly unprofessional," and "inappropriate," with others calling for his resignation due to perceived insensitivity and victim blaming. Amidst the varied reactions, a gathering has been organized by the victim's daughter at the courthouse to demand justice for Mrs. Mallory.
