Yesterday afternoon, Springfield Police made a significant arrest in a shooting case involving gunfire into a residence. Officers apprehended 36-year-old LaJuan Lake inside a vacant house on Washburn Street, where gunfire had endangered a juvenile the night before, according to an official release from the Springfield Police Department. The arrest involved multiple units, including the Emergency Services Unit, C3 Units, the Ordinance Unit, the K9 Unit, and Squad "B" officers.
Investigations on Washburn Street began with reports of vandalism and escalated with the report of shots fired, potentially by Lake, who allegedly used a vacant house to target a known individual's home. In the incident, a bullet pierced a second-floor bedroom wall, narrowly missing a sleeping child. On the day following the incident, Lake, who also had an outstanding warrant, was reported to have returned to the street, prompting police action.
The escalated police response saw members of the Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit, directed by Lt. Matthew Benoit, deploy a tactical robot before entering the house around 1:10 p.m. Lake was arrested without any incidents following the use of the robot. Police had exercised caution on the premise that Lake could have been armed.
After securing the scene, a search conducted by Springfield Police K9 Officer Eric Blair and K9 Flexx revealed a semi-automatic firearm with a large capacity on the second floor of the vacant house. "K9 Flexx located a large capacity firearm on the second floor," as reported by the Springfield Police Department. This evidence, found in the vacant property, tied Lake to the shooting from the night before.
Lake faces a slew of charges, including, but not limited to, possession of a large capacity firearm, armed breaking and entering, stalking, and attempted assault and battery with a firearm. These charges reflect the seriousness of the incidents on Washburn Street and the potential threat posed to the Springfield community. As legal proceedings commence, the documented efforts of the Springfield Police Department and its units, inclusive of the four-legged members like K9 Flexx, continue to highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to maintain safety and order in the face of such disturbances.
