
In a recent development, the Springfield Police Department's Special Victims Unit has apprehended 43-year-old George Riveron following an investigation into a sexual assault incident and other related crimes. According to the Springfield Police press release, the incident, which took place in the late afternoon of August 21, 2024, on the 300 block of State Street, came to light after the victim reported the assault, and Riveron was arrested on September 10th at his home.
The victim's account, which set the investigation in motion, described a brutal encounter where she was allegedly approached, forcefully grabbed, threatened, and sexually assaulted by Riveron, a stranger to her at the time; furthermore, Riveron is accused of also robbing her. Under the direction of Sgt. Karen Simmons and Captain Trent Duda, Special Victims Unit Detective Michael Vona acted upon this information, leading to Riveron's identification and subsequent arrest.
Riveron currently faces a series of charges including Aggravated Rape during the Commission of a Felony, Rape – Subsequent Offense, Indecent Assault & Battery on a Person 14 or over, Assault & Battery, Threat to Commit a Crime, Armed Robbery, Larceny Under $1200, and Intimidation of a Witness. The arrest warrant was obtained on Monday, and Riveron was apprehended within hours.
