Two men from St. Clair County, Michigan have been sentenced to 50 years in federal prison following their guilty pleas to charges related to the sexual exploitation of children. These sentences come in addition to previously imposed state prison terms for related offenses, as per courtroom announcements.
Austin Ray Sabb-Visga, 30, and Todd Allen Sabb-Visga, 48, residents of Kimball Township received their federal sentencing from U.S. District Judge Laurie J. Michelson on Wednesday, convictions that included two counts each of exploitation of children and one count of conspiracy to exploit children according to a report from The Voice News, they ran the now-shuttered Smith's Creek Equestrian Center and used it as a ground for their abusive practices, these grave acts not only shattered the sanctity of trust but also reduced a place of innocent learning to one marred by predatory behavior.
This sentence came after a predominant ruling in St. Clair County Circuit Court in June where both individuals faced up to life in prison after pleading guilty to two counts each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The convicts' legal penalties have been structured to run consecutively, ensuring a lengthy incarceration that reflects the severity of their actions.
"These sentences should send a strong message to these defendants and others like them who exploit our children behind closed doors and online," stated U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison in an announcement highlighted by CBS News Detroit; this case surfaced when a tipster reported a photo of child pornography to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which led to an investigation by Michigan State Police and the United States Secret Service found "prolific abuse" of one child over a year and the exploitation of at least two others.
In a joint effort, the Secret Service and the Michigan State Police executed a search warrant at the Sabb-Visgas' residence where they seized several cell phones, these devices held close to a thousand child pornography images and videos that detailed the men's involvement in the abuse, one of the affected children roughly 3 years of age as per the details by The Voice News.
