A St. Louis man has been sentenced to 75 months in prison after being apprehended with guns and drugs, following an incident where he threw a dog out of a window. U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey handed down the sentence on Thursday for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and other related offenses. According to a statement from the U.S. Attorneys Office, Landon Allen, 24, pleaded guilty to the charges in June.
The case surfaced on Oct. 19, 2023, when local law enforcement set up a sting operation to recover two stolen French bulldogs. The police eventually moved to secure the animals from an apartment linked to the theft. As they approached, a dog was tragically cast out the window in what appears to have been an attempt to quickly dispose of evidence. They then discovered Allen hiding in a closet and proceeded to immediately arrest him. A search of the apartment uncovered 105 capsules of fentanyl, pill-making equipment, and firearms, including an AR pistol and a handgun with an extended magazine. In a plea agreement, Allen admitted to possessing the firearms "in furtherance of fentanyl distribution," as per the U.S. Attorneys Office.
Law enforcement's integration in this instance was multipronged, with the North County Police Cooperative, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and the FBI all involved in the investigation. The pursuit of justice in the case was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Boyce. The agencies cooperated extensively to bring about a resolution to a case that involved not only illicit substances but also cruelty towards animals and firearm offenses.
Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, has caused a rise in overdose deaths in the U.S. Allen’s case, involving possession with intent to distribute this dangerous drug, highlights the ongoing struggle with the opioid crisis. His sentencing is not just a punishment for him but also a strong warning to others who deal in illegal drugs. Details of the sentencing were disclosed in a release from the U.S. Attorneys Office.
