Looking for a quirky, historical afternoon outing? Boulder County steps up the throwback game, literally, with a nod to America's favorite pastime. On October 6, the local team the Walker Ranchers will duel it out with their rivals using 19th-century rules, transporting those present back to the early days of "baseball" and yes, it's two words like they wrote it back then. According to Boulder County, expect to see the pitcher, quaintly referred to as a "hurler," throwing the ball to the "behind," or catcher, without the assistance of modern gloves or helmets.
The scene is set to unfold at the scenic Walker Ranch Homestead. A far cry from your standard Major League game, participants will be using a cloth ball and bases. The players, endearingly termed "ballists," will earn cheers from "cranks, rooters, or bugs", the 19th-century slang for fans. The event promises more than just historical authenticity, with costumed volunteers on hand for both fun and education. There’s even a bell that rings, when players reach home plate, a sound sure to evoke the sense of times gone by.
But it's not all watching and rooting from the sidelines. Attendees can also get a taste of the good, or perhaps not-so-easy, old days. Vintage games and traditional chores will be demonstrated by the volunteers, involving visitors in a hands-on experience of 1800s life. The organizers encourage guests to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, and why not pack a picnic, to round out the day?
The event is open to people of all ages, and the best part? It won't cost you a penny. Yes, that's right, it's completely free. Enjoy the autumn air, the rustic backdrop of Boulder's great outdoors, and a touch of historical sportsmanship for a unique and family-friendly afternoon. The event will take place seven miles west of Boulder at 7701 Flagstaff Rd and will run from noon to 3 p.m. For more information and the chance to experience history's baseline, you can find details on the free Autumn Heritage Day and Vintage Base Ball Game on the official Boulder County website.
