In a recent incident on a Friday night, a high school football game in Coweta County was the scene of an arrest after a student was found carrying a handgun. The event took place at approximately 9:30 p.m. during a game between Northgate High School and Newnan High School. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, an East Coweta High School student was observed with what appeared to be a concealed handgun in his waistband by Coweta County Sheriff's Deputies and school officials.
The situation escalated when the student attempted to flee after being confronted, but he was subsequently apprehended, and a handgun was secured by the school resource officers. Reports did not confirm whether the gun was loaded at the time of the incident. In the wake of the arrest, Dr. Ashley Wilkes, the principal of Northgate High School, issued a statement saying, "We greatly appreciate the quick action of our SROs and school administrators which led to the resolution of this incident," as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
This incident comes on the heels of a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County that resulted in the death of two teachers and two 14-year-old students, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The student's actions at the football game are part of a worrying trend following the tragic shooting, with dozens of students in the state being arrested for allegedly making threats of violence towards their schools, often via social media platforms.
Addressing the gravity of the situation, Dr. Wilkes highlighted the importance of community vigilance in her letter to parents. "Appropriate legal consequences will follow," she wrote. "Please remind your students to notify the administration at any time when they are concerned about their safety. It is our goal to always be proactive when the safety of students is concerned and to be transparent with our parents and stakeholders if an incident occurs," as mentioned in an article by Atlanta News First. Alongside the incident at the football game, a student was also arrested for bringing a loaded semi-automatic pistol to Duluth Middle School, further stressing the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures in school environments.
