The capture of a suspect in multiple freeway shootings unfolded after California Highway Patrol detectives synced their investigative prowess with cutting-edge surveillance tech, leading to the arrest of 47-year-old Damien Lamont Harris. The cases in question involved two separate firearm offenses on busy Bay Area freeways, evoking widespread alarm and prompting an intensive search. On the afternoon of August 3, two shootings occurred in close temporal proximity; the first left a driver wounded on Interstate 680 near Stoneridge Drive, and the second, a mere 45 minutes later, saw a motorist escape harm at the Industrial Parkway on-ramp to Interstate 880, setting off a manhunt that culminated in Harris's arrest, according to the California Highway Patrol's Golden Gate Division.
The CHP's methodical investigative practices, bolstered by Flock Safety camera resources, were instrumental in tracing the vehicle linked to the shootings, after which Harris was firmly placed as the primary suspect.
Following the issuance of an arrest warrant for Harris on multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault with a firearm, detectives proceeded with a coordinated inter-agency effort. On August 29, a coalition of law enforcement that included CHP's Warrant Service Team, the Fairfield Police Department, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office descended upon two residences in Fairfield and Fremont. Harris was apprehended at the former location without resistance, and the subsequent search yielded several firearms, ammunition, and suspected narcotics.
Following his arrest, Harris was booked into the Solano County Jail, where he now faces the original warrant and additional charges stemming from the discoveries made during his arrest.
