The Mansfield Police Department was the scene of a frenetic chase last Monday that came to a tragic end on E Broad Street and N SH 360. According to the Mansfield Police Department, the incident began with reports of a wrong-way driver in the 2200 block of FM 917 around 12:26 p.m.

Officers responded promptly, arriving at the scene within five minutes and attempting a traffic violation stop. However, the driver while initially complying, sped away and brandished a firearm at the officers. This action sparked off a pursuit during which the suspect fired at the chasing officers, officers returned fire but did not hit the suspect. The chase weaved into Johnson County and Burleson, and assistance was requested from outside agencies. Eventually, the chase circled back into Mansfield, concluding with the suspect's vehicle causing a collision on the overpass of E Broad Street.

The aftermath of the pursuit saw the suspect's vehicle immobilized, leading to the individual taking their own life with a self-inflicted gunshot. No other injuries to citizens or officers were reported. Mansfield Fire and Rescue declared the suspect deceased on the scene, the identity of whom will be unveiled by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office once appropriate notifications are made to next of kin.

The Texas Rangers have received notification of the incident and, The Mansfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is probing the death. An internal administrative investigation is also underway as announced by the department's Internal Affairs Unit. While details remain scarce as the investigations continue, a critical aspect of the tragedy lingers — the interruption and redirection of traffic till late in the afternoon as stated by authorities, all lanes remained closed, and vehicular movement was diverted to frontage roads at 4:30 p.m.
