Lowell, a city that typically experiences violence infrequently, was once again thrust into a startling situation on Saturday—a teenager was shot on Common Avenue. The shooting occurred in broad daylight, around 4 p.m., according to local authorities. The injured juvenile’s identity remains protected due to their age. As reported by NBC Boston, police responded to a distress call about a person with a gun and found the teen wounded, but fortunately, the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Witnesses disclosed to WCVB that the incident began as an altercation between two groups of kids, exploding into the kind of violence that erases innocence and imprints onto the memories of onlookers. "There wasn't a lot of blood loss. I held a lot of pressure on it, you know. He said he lost feeling in his legs and wanted to sleep. I said, 'No just wait for the paramedics,'" recounted Kevin Matte, a resident who aided the victim, evoking an image of fierce neighborhood solidarity confronting a spectacle of young blood spilled.
The collective concern of the incident was not just about this one teen but the potential reach of a bullet, less discriminating, risking the lives of younger children—innocents—who also play in the area, as reported by neighbors. The police, committed to untangling these threads of community violence, have yet to make any arrests in connection to the shooting, leaving questions looming as heavy as the gunpowder scent on that Common Avenue afternoon.
Adding to the human mosaic of this tragedy, WHDH shared a poignant detail from Kevin Matte's improvised role as first responder. "The bleeding wasn't that bad, he said he couldn't feel his legs and he was worried about dying," he told WHDH, a reflection of the immediate and disarming humanity shown in moments where life seems as fragile as a ceasefire. Matte's instructions to the boy—"not to fall asleep" and "to stay with me"—are a stark echo of a communal yearning for peace and the end of youthful bloodshed.
The Lowell Police Department continues to investigate the context and culprits of the shooting, urging anyone with knowledge to come forward, in hopes of restoring a piece of tranquility to Common Avenue—a stretch of road now intersected by the all-too-common thread of gun violence in adolescence.
