More than a week has passed since the sound of gunfire pierced the casual hum of commerce within Arizona Mills, and the Tempe Police Department is still actively piecing together the events of September 13. At around 7:30 p.m., what began as a clash between two groups escalated into a shooting, sending shoppers into a frenzy of survival—a stark echo of America's haunting gun violence narrative. In an effort to rapidly advance the investigation, authorities are now seeking assistance from the public, FOX 10 Phoenix reports.
Despite the efforts of responders from multiple agencies who conducted thorough sweeps of the mall, the suspects eluded capture, and importantly, no victims were found. The material remnants of the incident—a collection of 12 bullet casings—yield clues, but not the clear story law enforcement needs to conclude their inquiry. Sgt. Ryan Cook has urged anyone with potentially valuable footage to come forward, "If you were at the mall that night, and you had your phone out, you were with your family, you were taking video, you took a selfie, anything, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., we're asking, please, send us that information," he implored according to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Details on the identities and the extent of the groups involved remain scant. The police maintain hope that tips from the public will shed light on the altercation that unfolded in the food court. As communicated in an update provided by Arizona's Family, they are still trying to determine the dynamics that led up to the event, which was described as generating mass confusion among those present.
A video captured by Arizona’s Family News helicopter showcased the heavy law enforcement presence on the scene. While the incident stoked initial fears of an active shooter, such concerns were later dispelled by police affirmations that no injuries were reported. Recollections of terror still linger, with one evacuated teen recounting to Arizona's Family, "I was just like scared. I saw people running so I was freaked out. I didn’t know what was going on, so I just like hid back there." The police request that anyone with information call 480-350-8311 or submit tips through an online form, ensuring anonymity for those who choose it.
