Three individuals sustained injuries after a SUV collided with another vehicle and subsequently crashed into Genki Ya, a popular sushi restaurant located at the intersection of Stuart and Tremont streets in downtown Boston. The incident, which took place at 3:43 p.m. A witness, Dylan Stevens, described the scene as "pandemonium," NBC10 Boston reports.
Alex Simpson, who witnessed the crash from close proximity told CBS News Boston, "Very scary to be that close to know that if I didn't hear a crash and didn't look up, I could have been right there in the middle of it." Simpson, went on to aid the SUV driver.
"He was in the front seat seizing," and, "He was not responsive to any of our questions," in a statement obtained by NBC10 Boston. Boston EMS confirmed that two of the injured pedestrians were transported to local hospitals while the third was evaluated on the scene.
The damage to the sushi restaurant is substantial, with eyewitnesses reporting broken tiles, cracks, and shattered glass within the establishment. Nick Cheung, whose family owns Genki Ya, lamented the incident's impact on their business, stating to NBC10 Boston, "It's definitely going to hurt," he added, "Who knows when, but we'll build from this." The restaurant will be closed until the full extent of the damage has been assessed and repairs can be made.
While the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, no charges have been announced against the drivers involved at this time. The authorities have not indicated whether any charges will be forthcoming. Investigators have called in Boston's Inspectional Services to assess the structure, according to WCVB, to ensure the restaurant's integrity before it can reopen to the public.
