Tragedy Strikes Howell Nature Center, 12-Year-Old Student from Northville School Dies After Tree Falls During Field Trip

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday at Howell Nature Center where a 12-year-old boy lost his life after a tree struck him. The victim was accompanying a group from Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Northville on a field trip. During an outdoor presentation, a tree unexpectedly broke and fell on the boy, causing serious injuries. Despite being airlifted to Mott Children's Hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries, as reported by CBS News Detroit.

According to a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit, Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy said, "They started hearing some noise, some crackling like a tree was going to fall, and everybody took off running." The sheriff also confirmed that there was no prior activity that could have contributed to the tree's fall, and no strong winds were reported at the time. Sources speculate that rot within the tree's trunk may have been the cause.

In response to the devastating event, the Howell Nature Center has announced its closure for the following day, as per statements in CBS News Detroit. They conveyed their deep sorrow over the incident and have extended their condolences to the child's family, assuring that they are in close communication with the authorities to ascertain the details of the accident.

WXYZ reported that the event occurred amidst a lesson on fire-making when the group heard the ominous sound of a tree cracking. The tree, which had a rotted trunk, struck the boy on his head. Diane Casler, a local resident, hinted that the area is known to have old, decaying trees. "It happens, but it’s periodically," she said.

Our Lady of Victory Catholic School addressed the tragedy in a statement, confirming the student's critical injury and subsequent hospitalization. They further announced the field trip's cancellation, students' early return to their families, and noted that counseling services would be made available through coordination with the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Schools Department. The Howell Nature Center's CEO, Tina Bruce, also shared words of sorrow and support, promising to release further information as it comes to light.
