The tragic impact of Hurricane Helene worsens as two North Carolina deputies have died in the floodwaters. The NC Sheriffs’ Association reported the losses from Macon and Madison counties, according to a report by WBTV.

Macon County Deputy and courthouse security officer, Jim Lau, was reported missing when his truck was seen submerged in floodwaters on Friday. WCNC noted that Lau's body was later recovered in a river near Fulton Road. The Madison County Sheriff's Office has yet to comment on the second deputy's death.

WSOC-TV reported that a 911 call initiated the search for Lau. Speculation arose when, instead of returning to work after lunch, he was caught in nature’s deadly force. The truck he was driving matched the one witnesses saw in the river.

With the death toll from Hurricane Helene reaching 90, including 30 in North Carolina, the destruction across the region is evident. Videos online show large parts of Asheville and surrounding areas submerged. Madison County officials, in a statement to WCNC, said, "Jim was very liked and respected within our department" and noted that "He was known to be a hard worker, dependable, and he jumped in wherever help was needed. His absence will truly be felt in our agency."

While recovery efforts will repair roads and infrastructure, there is a deeper acknowledgment of the human toll. The NC Sheriffs’ Association urged, "We ask that you keep the families, friends, and colleagues of these deputies as well as the entirety of Western North Carolina in your thoughts and prayers during this unfathomable and difficult time," as reported by WBTV.
